The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) works to protect consumers by regulating industry and services and their respective ombudsmen.
An example of their work, would be the on-going test case regarding bank charges they are fighting through the courts.

They have regular updates on each case of their latest work advertised on their front page. I've dealt directly with them regarding a financial institution mis-handling a case, which although they were not responsible for, they still provided valuable information that I could include in a letter, which resolved the matter in my favour and caused the financial institution to back down from the position they were taking.
