My car insurance renewal quote this year is a 112% higher than I paid last year. I have been with Direct Line 3 years but now I am off to one of the reputable companies that have offered me the same insurance cover for less than I paid in 2009. I suspect that the current management at Direct Line do not have a grasp of economics!

Couldn't agree more Ian. Shouldn't it be the case that insurance (of all kinds) should be priced at a level that reflects the customer's claims record - crime in their area and vehicle, as it used to be? Now we are being forced to pay more for other people's claims, any losses the company have had over the previous year, etc. When the insurance offered is cheaper because of what job I do, it is on the realms of discrimination, and this don't forget, is for car insurance which is required by law.

They don’t appear on comparison web sites, they say, as they want to keep the costs to their customers as low as possible. Like hell they do. Direct Line don't appear on comparison sites because they are b****y expensive. They would have slotted in at 52 out of 87 quotes that I got from a price comparison website, if they had appeared there. No accidents or claims and the same car but they put my insurance up by 42% this renewal. Needless to say I won't be using them again.

A similar thing happened to me. I have been a DirectLine customer for 7 years, but my policy renewal figure has leapt 70%, even though I have not made any claim. I can't help thinking this is due to DirectLine being part of RBS, looking to claw money back for the group. I will be moving my policy.
